Work Description: In the summer of 2008, when oil prices where $4 - $5 a gallon, we decided to see if we could convert our current heating system to a heat pump. The first 3 contractors told us it was not possible to adapt our house to accommodate a heat pump. The problem seemed to be in installing the necessary duct work. We decided to try one more contractor (Alpha Mechanical) and we are so glad we did. They were able to installed the necessary duct work other contractors said was impossible.
Comments: They did such a wonderful job that we had them come back, last August, to install an electric hot water heater. We are no longer dependent on oil. To date, we have had no problems with the heat pump system. If we did, I know we can count on Alpha Mechanical (Jim, Jeremiah and Tom) to fix the problem. Pros: - PECO gives a discount (October - May) for total electric heat. - Our total cost (basic electric, heat, hot water) for the year has been less. We set the temperature to 74 during the winter and air conditioning between 75 - 76. - Ohhhh the air conditioning. Previously we had 2 air conditioning units. They were so noisy and the temperature was different through out the house. Now it is an even temperature and quiet. We should have done this a lot sooner. Cons: - So far none.
