Schools in Ontario and other San Bernardino County cities have been suffering from a lack of employees. There are 400 empty positions, mostly maintenance-oriented, blocked because of a dispute with the district’s Personnel Commission. As a result, there have been many shortcomings in the schools’ upkeep and external contractors have had to be called in. In the hot summer months one school’s HVAC system broke down and Ontario, California air conditioning contractors had to be called in. The incident resulted in the closing of the school for the day – something that probably wouldn’t have happened had the regular maintenance crew been on hand. And it’s not just A/C and heating contractors in Ontario who are being called in, other positions too are being filled by outsiders as the dispute continues.
