New ordinances in Arlington elementary schools are combating the dangers of intense heat that the city experiences during summer months. With 2011 experiencing almost 60 triple-digit-temperature days, the second-most on record, city officials aren’t taking any chances. Teachers were told to limit the amount of time they let children spend outdoors, make sure water is available, and switch recess time to the cooler, morning hours. Arlington, Texas a/c and heating contractors were also contacted to be on call in case of a malfunction, as a broken air conditioner would mean the school would have to close until repaired. An additional concern is the bus rides, where air conditioners routinely fail. But Arlington air conditioning contractors were notified and are prepared to repair those as well should anything happen to them.
