Hundreds of cats and dogs began suffering when an Austin Humane Society shelter’s air conditioning unit broke on a 108 degree day. The city was already under a severe heat advisory but wasn’t prepared for this. Air conditioning contractors in Austin, Texas said this was not the only breakdown, as many people were keeping their units running on high power for extended periods of time due to the extreme heat. The shelter’s staff brought in fans and added extra water bowls to the cages, and were also on the lookout for signs of heat exhaustion. While the shelter is having the units repaired, Austin a/c and heating contractors say it might take a few days before the building returns to its previous temperature.
