Pleated Air Filters
Pleated air filters are made with a material that is folded into pleats to provide good air flow within your HVAC system. Pleated air filters are one of the most common filters used in that they are more efficient than the conventional fiberglass filters and they cost less than the super-efficient electrostatic filters. Pleated air filters are made of material that is folded into pleats; they come in a variety of depth sizes such as 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 (representing inches of depth). The most common sizes for an HVAC system air filter are 1 or 2-inch depth. The pleats on the filter increase the entire surface area of the filter, thus helping extend the life of the filter.
Most pleated filters need to be replaced every few months and you should check the filter every month to make sure there is no blockage or damage to the filter. It is also important to follow the filter manufacturer's directions for replacement. Some pleated filters have a wire mesh on one side to help maintain the shape of the filter and to help prevent blockage. This is usually a sign of a lower quality filter, in that better quality filters are made of stronger material, thus eliminating the need for the wire mesh.
