Radiant Floor Heating- Before the floor is installed

While radiant floor heating is easiest to be installed in new home construction, it is still possible to install it in existing homes. Find a reliable HVAC contractor to install radiant floor heating in your home.

What is Radiant Floor Heating?

Radiant Floor Heating is a quality heat distribution system that delivers efficient, uniform heat by circulating hot water through tubes installed beneath the floor and has a fantastic reputation for being extremely energy efficient and for making you and your home feel warm and comfortable. With radiant floor heating, you will no longer have cold floors and be able to feel warmer in general in that the radiant floor heating is actually heating you and not the room itself. This also means that there is much less wasted energy compared to conventional heating methods such as forced air heating systems.

Types of Radiant Floors:
There are three kinds of radiant floors: Electric radiant floors, Hydronic floors or liquid floors, and Radiant air floors. The radiant floor type that you choose will depend on your specific heating needs.

1. Electric Radiant Floors- This type of radiant floor is expensive but can be great for additions where it could be impractical to extend the heating system into the addition.

2. Hydronic floors or liquid floors- Hydronic floors are the most popular radiant floor type and are most cost effective too.

3. Radiant Air Floors-  Radiant air floors are the least common in that they use hot air to heat the floors. Air-heated radiant floors can be used in conjunction with solar air systems.

Radiant Floor Advantages:
  • More efficient than other types of heating because no energy is lost through the ducts.
  • Good for allergy sufferers- Because there is no air from the heating system and ducts blowing around the house the level of allergens is reduced and it tremendously helps those who suffer from allergies.
  • Uses less electricity- This is especially true for hydronic radiant floors. Also, radiant heating is more effective way to heat a person, so you will be able to set the thermostat lower since you'll feel warmer. In fact, he American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) reports that a home with a radiant floor heat system can have the thermostat set 6 to 8 degrees cooler than the higher temperature of a typical convection or forced air heated home. This gives radiant floor heat a big advantage of cost savings through less energy usage for the same comfort level.
  • Decreased Need for Humidifier- With radiant floor heating, you will hardly ever need to use a humidifier which means an additional saving sin your electricity bill. Because radiant heat does not change the air moisture content in the home (as forced air systems do), humidifiers are no longer necessary to maintain a comfortable living space.
  • Quieter than conventional heating system since there is no blowing of air.
  • Can be installed under almost any floor type.
Here's the bottom line: You can't really go wrong with radiant floor heating. If you are unsure if radiant floor heating is right for your home then make sure you keep all of these important facts in mind, as mentioned above: Studies show that heating is the largest energy expense for most homeowners, accounting for almost two-thirds of annual energy bills in colder areas of the country. Radiant heat's ability to warm a home from the ground up produces evenly heated rooms that are not only more comfortable to live in, but are more energy-efficient to maintain at the desired comfort level. In addition, radiant heat also reduces the levels of dust, pollen, and mold spread by conventional forced air heating systems, making your home a healthier place to live.
